Zakiya is the CEO of The Chayah Movement, a for-profit entity that focuses on offering ways for individuals to minimize their textile waste. The Chayah Movement acts as a textile recycling hub, through resale curation, upcycling, repurposing and donations that support multiple non-profits. Additionally, Chayah promotes textile waste awareness, upcycling projects, community recycling events, re-purposing ideas, thrift and sustainable fashion empowerment on social media.
Zakiya also works as a Marketing and Admissions Director for a local Christian school, while maintaining faculty status for Seattle Colleges after serving as one of the main instructors for the Career Bridge program, managed by the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. She came on as a Career Bridge instructor after the pilot women's cohort. Her role as instructor evolved from volunteer, who used her passion for fashion to ensure the women were all clothed for their new, professional journey. In this volunteer role, she connected the women with Dress for Success and The Working Wardrobe, in addition to her taking in an abundance of donations and starting the program's current clothing closet for the women participants.
Zakiya's professional background is quite extensive, as she began working at the age of 9, when she washed dishes in the kitchen at Al Davies Boys and Girls Club to earn $5 a night. This began her journey to a strong work ethic, self-sufficiency and independence.
In addition, to excelling in athletics Zakiya worked various jobs before obtaining her AAS Degree in Legal Support. She worked as a Legal Secretary for over 8 years; however, through volunteer efforts she realized her passion was for helping people succeed in life and be their best self. This passion led her to Alere Wellbeing (now Optum Health) a health and wellness company that specialized in helping people change unhealthy behaviors through behavior modification. She started out as a behavior modification coach and eventually worked her way up to Implementation Analyst during her time with the company.
Zakiya's professional background only makes her valuable and effective in teaching Job Readiness Training and Life skills. Zakiya went on to complete her BA Degree in Communication Studies and she has recently devoted time to learning about non-profits (set-up, operations, donor relations and fundraising), coaching, community organizing, program management and event planning.
Zakiya is not only the "Z" in From A to Z, LLC but the Vice President, a Ready 4 Release instructor and the Empowered to Empower (E2E) - Support Network Founder.
